It really is Baltic in Helsinki, but there are interesting, albeit costly, ways to warm up,
The city’s stunning buildings loom against icy skies, stamps of the Russian Tsar who proclaimed it capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland in 1812 (and markers for tourists who come to admire the city that will be World Design Capital in 2012). The wide boulevards are almost empty, apart from the occasional passer-by wrapped in five layers of clothing.
If you’ve seen any of the authentic Swedish detective series, Wallander, you’ll have a flavour of this part of the world. You’ll probably have heard plenty of jibes about the “alcoholic” Finns, too, and it’s true that weekend evenings in Helsinki reach the same levels of drunkenness as in Scotland.
